CocoBomb (Schwarzbier w/ cocao nibs + coconut) (BK)

Decided to do a split batch and add some adjuncts. Intentionally going real heavy on the coconut.

Process notes

2019-03-17
After cooling + gathering ~5 gallons of wort for BJ; bring the remaining wort to a boil and add in the cocoa nibs and boil for 15 minutes.
2019-03-17
Volume was lower than expected: ~3.5 gallons.
2019-04-03
Fermented ~51° for 10 days. Since then, ramping up to ~67°. SG is 1.017.
2019-04-03
Noticeable more bitter and roasty than BJ. Cocoa nib flavor isn't really coming through.
2019-04-22
Kegged. Sitting ~35° for ~2 weeks before kegging. Since there was only ~3 gallons of beer, I added ~1 gallon from BJ into this keg.

Boil for 90 minutes

At 15 minutes
8 ounces of Cocoa Nibs (Carvalho brand nibs were put into a bag.)

Yeast

2019-03-17
Pitch starter (started on 2019-03-16 with 1000mL water, IntermittentShaking, 100 grams DME, 0.50 tsp FermaidK) made from 2 packs of WLP833 German Bock (WhiteLabs) at 53°.

Dry additions

2019-04-22
2 pounds of Coconut. (Toasted Anthony's Organic Shredded Coconut at 300° for ~30 minutes. Put in nylon bag w/ handful of marbles and put it into the keg.)

Tasting notes (7.00/10; 1 rating)

It's only been a day, but there's a ton of coconut character. I can't imagine how this will change over time, but it's like an Almond Joy now.

[7/10] Off-white, tan head that quickly dissipates. Big Almond Joy coconut, sweet aroma. Tons of coconut in the flavor. Slick mouthfeel. Nothing but a coconut bomb, but as that, it's pretty good.
