2025-03-11
Kegged. Good clarity, brownish red color. Rye definitely comes through in the aroma and flavor. Some piney, earthy hop character on the finish. Mild amount of sweetness. This should be good.

Boil for 60 minutes

At 60 minutes
1 ounce of 13.6% Alpha Acid Chinook pellets (BSG 4210A)
At 15 minutes
1 ounce of 6.6% Alpha Acid Cascade pellets (BSG CASP8Z)
At 15 minutes
At 5 minutes
2 ounces of 6.6% Alpha Acid Cascade pellets (BSG CASP8Z)
While cooling
3 ounces of 6.6% Alpha Acid Cascade pellets (BSG CASP8Z)

Mash

[70.80%] 10 pounds of 2-Row (Briess) (My parents picked up the ingredients, so I'm not sure which brand of malts were used.
)

[14.16%] 2 pounds of Malted Rye (Briess) (Briess)

[14.16%] 2 pounds of CaraRed (Weyermann)

[0.88%] 2 ounces of Carafa Special II (Weyermann)

Single infusion mash. Mashed with 5 gallons (1.42 quarts per pound) of reverse osmosis water for 60 minutes. 14lb 2oz of grain was used in the mash. (Original recipe called for some Epsom Salt, but I decided to keep it simple and not add any.)

Strike water temp: (0.2/1.42) * (152 - 68) + 152 = 163.9

1.80g calcium chloride and 4.30g gypsum added to water

After 0 mins
mash is 156°; Thermapen battery was dying so the strike water temp was all over the place. This may be why the temp is a bit higher than expected.
After 30 mins
mash is 153°
After 60 mins
mash is 152°

Sparge

Sparged for 56 minutes with 4 gallons of 170° reverse osmosis water.

1.40g calcium chloride and 3.40g gypsum added to water

pH is 5.25; specific gravity is 1.086

pH is 5.38; specific gravity is 1.068
After 30 mins
pH is 5.42; specific gravity is 1.056

2 ounces of 6.6% Alpha Acid Cascade pellets. (BSG CASP8Z. Boiled cheese cloth bag and handful of marbles before putting hops in.)
